The Farmington Canyon Trail is about 3.8 miles RT, but since they closed the gate to the canyon we had to walk from the bottom of the canyon to the waterfall which is the last stop on the trail. So it's ended up being 5 miles round trip with walking from the bottom of the canyon. I was surprised at how big the canyon was and of course, it started out as a fall looking hike and when you get to the last waterfall it turned into winter.
The Farmington Canyon Trail is somewhat shaded, so I would say go anytime during the year but bring spikes with you. I didn't bring spikes but they do have a rope to lower you down to the waterfall. This trail is not very steep it has some elevation gain but not a lot. So it's manageable to get up to the top.
Farmington Creek is the largest stream in Davis County. Along the way, you'll pass about three old cars that fell off the road back in the 1950s-60s. I thought it was strange to see these cars that fell off the road and was wondering how they feel, but then if you look up you can see a barricade for the road. This route has expansive views and of course pretty waterfalls that make the hike worthy. Bring some snacks, water and of course if you have a dog bring the dogs along. You can have them off-leash if they are good around other dogs.
I would say that during the wintertime in November I didn't see a lot of people on the trail, so its best to go around in the wintertime so it's not crowded like in the summer times.
Distance: 3.8 miles RT from trailhead, the canyon was closed so we started at the bottom of the canyon which was 5.0 miles RT
Elevation gain: 1,284 ft
