Cancun is probably the most close to America and probably a fun place to travel for your first time out of the US. You will be able to find the Americanized side if you want to or you can explore the actual place and see how it is while there.
Of course, This is my third time visiting Mexico and it's probably a fun place and a cheap way to travel too. I would spend at least a week down in Cancun because you can go down and see Tulum and Playa Del Carmen while you are here and those are about 30 mins south of Cancun. It's worth it if you like exploring different countries. I would get your own car when you book your flight. You can get them for one dollar plus the insurance, but I'd rather drive around instead of waiting for buses. One thing you will find is the pretty blue ocean!
It was a common sight to see ruins anywhere you go usually, these ruins are about 20-40 mins to drive there, but they are worth it to go explore different areas of it.
I like going to Mexico during the winter time because it's not too hot nor too cold and when you go in the summer you will expect it to be about 90+ degree's plus humidity so I would suggest going during Spring Break or September-March. All you need is your swimsuit, sandals, and shorts and you can explore the whole area!

Like most Caribbean islands, this is the perfect place to just chill as well. There are endless beaches to go see and just hang out and get tan.
Once you’ve gotten all the sun you want, Cancun offer's so many nightclubs when you go downtown. You will hear the music when you are walking around to the mall and you can go visit them and see if you enjoy them or just get a drink and relax.
